An oral history of the Toronto graffiti movement told through the voices of the writers themselves.

ABOUT TORONTO GRAFFITI

Toronto Graffiti: The Human Behind the Wall is a documentary oral history capturing the voices and stories of graffiti writers from the Toronto scene.

Many of the writers featured are among the first graffiti artists in Canadian history — pioneers who brought graffiti to Canada and developed it, sharing their stories in depth for the first time.

Built from extensive interviews with graffiti artists and years of photographic documentation
, the book captures and preserves firsthand perspectives from inside the culture and documents the evolution of one of the city’s most influential underground art movements.

Picture
Rather than presenting graffiti solely as visual art, the project focuses on the human stories behind the walls — documenting the motivations, experiences, and ideas of the writers themselves.

About the Project
Toronto Graffiti: The Human Behind the Wall documents more than three decades of graffiti culture in Toronto.

The book includes:
  • 500 pages of interviews and documentation
  • 20 graffiti writer interviews
  • more than 1,000 photographs
  • timelines and historical context
  • commentary exploring the cultural and social dimensions of graffiti

Together these elements create a rare oral history of the Toronto graffiti scene and preserve voices from within the movement.

Cultural and Academic Recognition
Toronto Graffiti is recognized as an important documentation project of urban art and graffiti culture.

The book has been:
  • used as reference material by the City of Toronto
  • sold through the York University bookstore
  • referenced by professors at the University of Toronto and Toronto Metropolitan University
  • showcased at Centennial College
  • included in the Toronto Public Library collection
  • archived by the National Library of Canada
  • sold at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)

This work is increasingly referenced as a cultural record documenting the evolution of graffiti in Toronto.

Why This Project Matters
Graffiti culture is often documented visually but rarely through the voices of the writers themselves.

Toronto Graffiti preserves firsthand stories from inside the movement and offers readers a rare opportunity to understand graffiti culture from the perspective of the artists who created it.

By documenting these voices, the project serves as both a cultural record and an archival resource for future research into urban art and graffiti culture.
